Lucas (43)

I walked down the sidewalk in yet another town. There weren’t many people out by surprise but I looked down at a watch I bought from a store and realized it was already hitting ten. I shoved my hands in my jacket pockets and kept walking forward. I still had no idea where to find Lucifer’s location and I knew I was running out of time by sensing Luci’s irritation. He had kept silent after we left Zoe though so I was glad for at least a little peace for awhile.
As I passed a crowd of people I saw a couple of men walking like they were drunk. I dodged into a store and waited for them to pass. I nodded to the cashier who was just starting to close up and walked back out. I looked back at the two men as they turned the corner and sighed in relief. With Luci’s help I had been able to spot demons more easily. I hurried down the sidewalk in the opposite direction from the demons and passed more people who gave me dirty looks for bumping into them. I knew I had to get out of town pretty quick here but I needed to stack up on more supplies before I left for anywhere.
I walked until I came to a supermarket. I walked in and went to the food section and got a sandwich from the deli and a few other small things. I also bought another pair of clothing for a just in case scenario. After I had paid for everything I realized that I was running low on money.
Now to find a car I thought looking around and found a parking lot to a casino close by. I knew gas cost money as well but at least I could use the car at least until it ran out of gas. Then I could just ditch it and continue walking. I ran over there and searched for a car. I looked around to find one that I could try to hotwire and caught the shiny glint of red.
“Ok now that is my kind of car.” I smiled looking at a cherry red Ferrari just begging to be stolen
I looked around to make sure no one was in distance of seeing what I was going to do and ran over to the car. I stopped and put my hand on the door handle and snapped my figures with my other hand. The door immediately unlocked and I opened it. I got into the car and searched for a pair of keys just in case the person would be that stupid but it looked like I had to just hotwire the thing. I did however find someone’s purse. Ok, so the person was dump enough to leave their money (well that fixes my money problem) and ID but they took their keys…wow. I took a few deep breaths and closed my eyes trying to imagine the engine starting…a few seconds later I heard it roar to life and smiled. I thought about leaving the purse but someone else might take it so I just kept it in the car. I put the car into reverse and backed out of the parking lot, shifted into drive and drove down the road as fast as I dared.
I had just turned on Philmore street when I thought I noticed someone jogging down the sidewalk through the crowd of people. When I noticed the shirt and hair I realized it was Zoe. I drove up to her, rolled down the passenger window, and called out her name. I slowed down to a stop as she looked over and I waved my hand for her to get in. I could tell she was a little hesitant to get in the car but she finally made her way through the crowd and got inside.
“Well isn’t this a surprise?” I smirked
“How about we don’t talk, and you just drive.” She replied looking back as though she was being followed…I wouldn’t be surprised though if she was.
I stepped on the gas and we drove down the street. I drummed on the steering wheel as Master of Puppets by Metallica played on the radio.
“Life of death becoming clearer. Pain monopoly, ritual Misery, chop your breakfast on a mirror!” I sang. I laughed when Zoe rolled her eyes “Come on Zo, loosen up why don’t you?” but she just ignored me and looked out her window. “Ok…we don’t have to talk I guess….”
A few moments of nothing but music did she finally speak up “So where did the car come from?”
“Uh…a parking...lot.”
“You stole someone’s car?!”
I looked over at her “No, I went up to the owner and politely asked them if I could borrow their car.” I replied sarcastically
“Out of all cars you picked this one.” She replied bitterly
“Hey it was either this or some granny car.” I replied
“This isn’t really blending in Lucas.”
“We still on about that?” I asked but then raised my hands up in defense when she glared at me “ok, ok fine. No one would expect me to choose a flashy car though. They’d expect me to blend in…so what better way to blend in then by being right out in the open?”
She stayed silent.
“So what were you doing back there anyways?” I asked
“What you don’t know for once? That’s a surprise.” She said sarcastically
“Hey, you told me to leave you alone. Why would I try to come look for you again?”
“I don’t know why did you?”
“I didn’t. I was just getting supplies which you’re stepping on right now.”
“Oh, sorry,” she replied moving the stuff so she was no longer stepping on them. The only thing that wasn’t on her side was my backpack “So who’s is this?” she asked motioning to the purse in her lap
“I don’t know,” I replied “I just kept it for the money. The credit cards would come in handy expect that people could probably trace them if I used them.”
“So where are we going then?”
“Wherever I guess,” I replied “I still don’t know where to find Luci’s location…”
“You know I can’t let you do this.” She said softly
“Yah? Tell me that when you decide to kill me or when you’re the one driving. Until then I guess you’re just along for the ride.” I smiled and sped the car up as we got back onto the highwayX

I looked at the car’s clock and it was getting on twelve thirty. Zoe was still awake by surprise but I tried to keep my eyes open as we drove down the road. She looked over when I yawned.
“How much sleep have you been getting?” she asked
“Uhm...a couple hours a week.” I replied
“A week?” she asked in disbelief “How are you even awake? Why are you even driving?!”
“Jeez Zo calm down,” I laughed “I’m a little tired yes but I’m fine really.”
“Maybe you should just let me drive…just in case.”
“And let you take me wherever to get me killed? No thanks, you might be my friend Zo but you have a long way to go get my trust these days.”
“Well excuse me for not wanting to die in a car accident!” She snapped
I turned the radio up a little higher “What? Sorry can’t hear you!”
She sighed and fell back in her seat “I should have never got in this car.” I heard her mumble as I turned the radio back down
“Why did you then?”
“Because I was running for my life!”
I scrunched my eyebrows “Why?”
“Oh some stupid rouges caught me for some reason. They kept on talking about…” she went silent
“They kept talking about what?” I asked confused by why she fell silent all of a sudden
“That’s why they took me…” she said softly
“Huh?”
She looked over at me “They were using me to get to you…”
I was taken aback. How did they find out? I guess Society news travels fast…then again there was that accident back when I was first captured by the rouges…which is still a little blurry to me.
I faked a laugh though to cover my nerves “I don’t see how that would have worked.”
“Are you saying you wouldn’t have come after me?”
“Don’t see how I could if I didn’t know about it.” I replied quickly
She fell silent for a moment “If you did would you?”
Damn it I cursed silently “…uhm.”
“Lucas are you saying you wouldn’t have?” she said becoming irritated and a little angry
“Well considering the fact that you stabbed me twice already,” I replied “my side still hurts thank you very much.”
She sighed and shook her head and continued looking out the window.
“You should get some sleep though,” I replied “I’m not the only one who probably looks like hell.”
“Thanks,” she scoffed “girls just love to hear that.”
“At least I’m honest.” I replied keeping my eyes on the road ahead “But seriously Zo. You really look like you could use it.”
“No thanks,” she replied bitterly “I’m not the only one who needs to earn the other’s trust.”
“Touché.”X

When I couldn’t take it anymore I pulled into a parking lot at a super 8 motel. It was two stories tall and very old looking. Zoe was just starting to doze off when I put the car in park and turned it off.
“Where are we?” Zoe asked groggily
I stayed silent as I got out. I would tell her in the morning or she would figure it out when she wasn’t so tired. While Zoe had fallen asleep for a little while Lucifer had told me that there might be someone here who might be able to tell me where to find his location; some fallen angel by the name Malpas. Luci said he shouldn’t be hard to find if I kept my eyes out for something…unusual about the birds. Whatever that meant.
I walked up to the front desk  and asked the guy if he had any rooms left.
“Kind of late isn’t it?” he asked
“Is it any of your business?” I snapped
He sighed and went back to his computer “We have two rooms left on the second floor; one queen sized bed and the other is a king. The king has a tub and the queen has a shower.”
“Don’t you have any with two beds left? I have someone else outside.” I asked
“Should have gotten here earlier or made a reservation then.” He yawned
“Fine how much?” I asked
“Forty six dollars a night for the queen and fifty five for the king.”
“I’ll take the queen sized room.” I sighed and gave him enough for two days (I hoped it wouldn’t take longer then that).
“Mhmm, ok thank you. It’s room 208 and have a nice stay.” He replied taking the money and giving me the room keys. I slide the two cards in my pocket and mumbled thanks.
I rolled my eyes as I turned around and went back outside to the car. I went to the passenger’s side of the car and opened the door. I shook Zoe awake and she jolted awake and looked around in panic.
“Jeeze girl calm down,” I replied “Come on I got us a room for tonight. So make yourself useful and help me carry everything in.”
She got out of the car and slapped me on the back of my head; guess I deserved that. We walked with the bags in our hands. Zoe kept the purse and I kept my backpack. Once we got to the second floor we walked to the room where I grabbed the key from my pocket with my free hand and slide the card in. The light turned green and I opened the door into a light brown room. The room wasn’t that big but it wasn’t small either. The hotel must have been having a discount this month or something because to my surprise the room was pretty decent. To my surprise it even had a little fridge.
“I’m going to go see if I can get any clothes from the lost and found here for you.” I replied putting the food in the fridge
“Only one bed?” She asked
“….Yah…it’s all they had left.”
“You’re sleeping on the floor then you know that right?” she asked turning around
“Okay that’s fine,” I replied “and I’d ask you to come with but I think you need to get that smell off of you.”
“What smell?”
“I didn’t want to mention it before but then when you told me you were with rouges…yah. I’m just going to go and let you get ready for bed…you can barrow a shirt until I come back bags if you want to use as pajamas.” I replied
“Whatever.” She replied and I set a one of the door keys next to the TV as she grabbed the remote. We met gazes for a second and stopped. I thought about the kiss immediately as I looked into her chocolate brown eyes. Before I knew it we were closer then we had been….seconds passed as we just looked at each other.
“Ok,” I said quickly breaking the gaze and walking to the door “I should go…I’ll be back in a bit.”
When she didn’t reply I opened the door and walked out.
“Stupid, stupid!” I muttered to myself as I walked down the hall
You shouldn’t have brought her Lucifer chastised me
I didn’t plan on seeing her so soon! It’s not like I couldn’t have left her.
You could have if you didn’t stop the car and yell for her!
Well what’s done is done so get over it. I’ll still find this Malpas guy for you.
You better because I don’t know how long I can keep that disease from going too much farther…
I tried to ignore him after that. He would add a comment now and then as we walked downstairs but I never replied back. I walked down and asked the new guy from behind the desk if I could see the lost and found and he led me to the back so I could. I didn’t find much; just a v neck shirt, some shorts and ripped jeans. I figured I could always get her some better clothes in a few hours, so we could always leave these when we leave this town.
I thanked the guy and went back up to the room. I wondered if Zoe would recognize this place when the sun comes up…I knew I shouldn’t have pried in her head but I couldn’t help it. When I found out that what happened back with the rouges I thought I might try to cheer her up a little bit. Turns out the place where I needed to go was home to a little café that her parents first met. I guess Central City Colorado was more romantic then I thought. So I thought maybe I could surprise her by taking her there to get lunch tomorrow….
When I got to the room I opened the door and found that Zoe was still in the shower. I walked over and sat on the front side of the bed and watched the news. Looks like the rouges haven’t slowed down with their killings. I sighed and looked at my watch to see that it was already two in the morning. I grabbed my backpack and took out the knife and hid it in a drawer in the nightstand. I then laid down with my backpack as a pillow. I stared up at the ceiling for a little while but couldn’t see to find sleep. I stood up and sat on the side of the bed and continued to watch about some family that had been slaughtered. I heard the bathroom door open and Zoe came out with her jeans and a shirt I bought earlier on.
“Hey.” I replied
“Did you find anything?” she asked crossing her arms
“Not much,” I replied “we can always get something for you to wear later but here.” I said throwing her the clothes
“Thanks.” She replied flatly and set them down on the bed
I stood up “Well I don’t know about you but I think I’m going to try and get some sleep for once.”
She didn’t reply as she slipped under the covers of the bed. As I laid back down she threw a extra blanket at me “Thanks.” I replied
A few moments of silence passed after Zoe turned off the TV. I kept thinking about what she she earlier about if I had known that she had been captured…would I have come for her? Despite everything that had happened between us…I would have. I think she knew that to.
A few minutes later Zoe had fallen back to sleep and I was still awake. Even when I did find sleep I still tossed and turned. I opened my eyes and looked at the ceiling. I wanted to get up and walk around but I didn’t want to wake up Zoe. I lifted up my arm and looked at me watch: 3:30 it read. I sighed and took off my watch and put it up on the nightstand. I closed my eyes seeing nothing but darkness. I hoped that tomorrow would be a better day.X
