“That can be arranged.” He smiled
I pushed Evelynn back as he charged at me. He slammed me into the brick wall and we broke through. My head was spinning but my adrenaline was pumping through my body to keep me awake. I moved out of the way as he tried to bring his knife down. I tried to stand up but fell down trying. I heard Gedeon laugh as he came forward and stepped on my back.
“You’re pretty weak for a newbie.” he laughed
“I’m not like you.” I growled
He laughed even more “Why of course you are! Who else would have attacked their own flesh and blood? I guess I should have known the first day I saw you. I should have seen that temper you had. Tell me what’s it like to be the big bad wolf of the demon world?”
I looked up at Eve as she stood wearily outside of the building, Gedeon saw this as well.
“Michael’s pureblood huh? You’re kind does have good taste in food after all.”
I felt my anger flare and with a speed I didn’t know I had I flipped myself over, grabbed him by the ankle and threw him onto the ground. I teleported myself just as he was just about to grab me. I heard him snarl from inside the building and grabbed Eve’s hand.
“Hold your breath.” I told her and she did
We were only a block away from where we had been. I knew transporting to Finland would take a big toll on me, so I pulled Eve down the sidewalk and started to run. We pushed past people who gave us dirty looks but I tried not to notice. I tried to calm myself just enough so things wouldn’t get out of control, for some reason it worked. I still felt as though I could lose it at any moment but it was better than having no control what so ever. I knew Eve started to notice my fatigue when she started to slow down.
“Clement stop.” She said pulling on my hand
I slowed down and looked back at her “We can’t stop now Eve.”
“Clement I heard you and Layla about Finland. You’re going to kill yourself if you keep up at this.”
Then next second Gedeon was coming at us with a knife through the air. I closed my eyes and we were a few feet away from where he hit the ground.
“Clement!”
“Sorry, old habit.” I replied as we ran down the sidewalk
We passed by the few people that were still out at this time. I looked behind us and found no sign of Gedeon’s pursuit. I kept a look out for any other demons as we slowed down by a closed clothing store. She pulled me over to the door and with a flick of her wrist it unlocked and we headed inside while she closed the door. We scooted against the wall beneath the windows as we heard footsteps pass. I gave a sigh of relief.
“Do you think we lost him?” Eve whispered
“For now…but not for long. We need to get back to the hotel and get everybody out of here. When there’s one rouge there’s sure to be more. For now we need to wait.”
“How do you know?”
“Seems most likely…plus that is what our clan would do.”
A few minutes of silence passed between us when she spoke up in a whisper “Clement?”
“Hmm?”
“All those things you said back in the alley…were they true?”
“….yes, I meant everything Eve. You shouldn’t be with me Eve…you can’t.”
“That’s not what I meant and why can’t I?”
“Because of Malcolm,” I scoffed but then looked over at her “because at any second I could lose control like I did back in the parking lot, like back at the Society.”
“You know what I think? I think you’re just afraid to get close to somebody.”
“I’m not afraid Evelynn,” I sighed but then I knew I had to be honest with her “…I’m terrified.”
“Why?”
“Because I’ve been hurt too many times already by people I know and care about. It’s just easier to be alone. If you keep to yourself and away from others that way you have nothing to lose.”
“What good can come out of being alone?” she asked me “Sure if you get close to someone there will be chances of losing them…but wouldn’t they be important enough to take that chance?”
“You’ve been listening to the archangels too much.” I smiled
She smiled at this to and I could almost trace a bit of a blush as we sat in the shadows. I couldn’t think of a time where we had ever sat down like this and actually talked. Maybe one day there wouldn’t be a threat looming over us when we did. We sat in silence for a few moments when she spoke up again.
“Clement? What were you going to say back there in the alley…before Gedeon showed up?”
I laughed “That I loath you.”
She rolled her eyes and sighed “Seriously Clement. Clement?”
I pressed my pointer figure to my lips and silence took over. I just heard footsteps running when I saw Gedeon and two more rogue demons appear on the cashier desk. I made Eve duck and we ducked behind another counter in the store. To my left I could see the back door as our only escape (the front door would be too obvious).
“Oh Clement?” Gedeon called “Oh Evelynn? Come on…we just want to talk.”
I looked at Eve hoping she’d understand that it would be easier to teleport out of here but she shook her head in no. I gave her an annoyed look but listened to her for once. I think we made a deal without even having to speak; we would only teleport unless we had no choice what so ever. I scanned the store for anything that could be used as a weapon and found a few metal bars that I could break off the cloths lines. I started to get up onto my knees when Eve started to pull me down. I shot her a glare and mouthed “run”. I rolled to my right and flipped backwards as a demon attacked me. I saw Eve dart out of the building and Gedeon follow after her as the other demon came to attack me as well. They weren’t trying to kill me I realized after a few seconds of blocking their attacks.
They’re just trying to occupy me while Gedeon goes after Eve.
I dodged the first one’s attack and brought the other right in front of me as the one brought her sword to thrust. In anger the one the first demon had stabbed, stabbed their comrade as well. Yah, there could be no way I was stupid enough to become a rouge. I ran out the back doors and down the sidewalk when I heard Eve yell out my name. I ran as fast as I could and found Eve backed up against a fence as Gedeon walked towards her. I barreled into him, pushing him to the ground. I got up quickly and pulled Eve out of there as fast as my limits let me. He was right on our heels in a matter of seconds, so I stopped and let go of Eve’s hand as I took the full blow of the impact. I heard Eve yell out my name as Gedeon and I vanished.
Everything was too blurry to see where Gedeon transported us, but it was cold. I knew Eve and Layla were right. If I didn’t stop transporting soon I was going to be in big trouble. I was on my hands and knees trying to catch my breath as I heard his footsteps echo.
“If only you just agreed to come with me,” Gedeon sighed and I could just make out the glint of his silver blade “Then I wouldn’t have to waste my time in killing one of my own…I think I’ll just go ahead and kill the girl when I’m finished here…”
“No.” I croaked as I stood up but he just slammed me into a wall that was cold and damp. We must be in a cave somewhere. He let go immediately and let my body fall back onto the ground.
“I think I’ll possess her first though…kill her from the inside…make her feel what it’s like to be eaten alive, or maybe I’ll have her attack the others so they’ll end up having to kill her. I think I’ll go with the second one but what do you think?”
My body was shaking from the cold but my temper was over its limit. I looked up at him and he just smiled “Told you that you were one of us.”
I smiled and laughed darkly “You shouldn’t be happy about that.”
I got up and ran towards him making us transport back to the town. I felt a sharp pain in my side right before we hit the ground in the parking lot of the hotel. It was Gedeon’s chance to finish me now because I had no energy left to defend myself or Eve. I breathed heavily as I searched for the knife but everything was swimming and I felt like my head was going to explode. I looked up as a blurry silhouette of Gedeon stood over me.
“Until next time.” He growled and disappeared as he looked to his side
“Clement!” I heard someone yell and run over to me
I looked up at the blurry figure but couldn’t tell who it was. I started to close my eyes when they slapped at my face. Yep that was Layla. I felt it as she pulled out the knife and I cried out in pain. She looked up at the hotel but someone else answered that they made it so no one could see or hear us.
“Stay awake.” she told me but I was so tired
“Kill me.” I said barley in a whisper
“What?”
“Kill me,” I said a little louder “I can’t…I can’t.”
“Clement you’re not making sense.”
“He was right.”
“Who? Clement? Clement god damn it stay awake!” she yelled as my eyes started to close again
“I don’t..want..to be a monster.” I replied as my breath was catching up from the loss of blood
“You’re not.”
“No…I am…you were right..about something being..wrong with me…Oh god Layla just kill me!”
I could hear Eve yelling my name in the background but I couldn’t reply loud enough for her to hear me. I heard someone else run up beside us and start talking to Layla. I saw a quick nod between them and felt a hand on my side. My body flinched at the touch but Layla held me down as a steaming heat seeped into the wound. I tried to fight them away but it did no good. The heat lowered from scorching hot to a bearable warmth. I turned my head and made out Eve’s face just before I passed out.•
The next time I woke up it was in the middle of the day and I was in the back of a car. I could hear voices outside and soft music playing. I opened my eyes to find Eve looking down at me. I sighed as she brushed my bangs away from my forehead.
“They needed someone to keep an eye on you while they get gas and some more supplies.” She said looking down at me concerned
“You guys don't have to do that.” I replied
“Clement you almost died!” she replied “I think we do.”
“You guys care too much sometimes.” I said as I started to sit but but then grounded my teeth when a pain shot in my side
“Abri tried to heal you as much as she could but she’s still learning.” Eve told me as she touched my shoulder and pulled me gently down.
It felt weird being this close to Eve…feeling this comfortable. I felt like a child being comforted by his mother. I looked up at her as she looked out the window and started to chuckle. She looked down at me in question.
“Imagine the look on Malcolm’s face if he saw us like this. I’d pay good money to see that.”
She rolled her eyes “You guys are unbelievable sometimes.”
“What would life be like without us though?” I smirked
“A lot more peaceful.” She replied
I smirked “but not as adventurous.”
“Oh defiantly.” She said sarcastically as I smiled up at her. God it felt good to be with her. It felt innate, I couldn’t imagine being with anyone else right now.
She smiled as a few more moments passed “You’re starting to look like your old self again.”
“How so?”
“Well your eyes aren’t so red anymore.”
I looked away from her gaze. Last night started to become clear; I remembered how I tried to convince Layla to kill me. Trying to warn her what I was…a rouge, but Eve just said that I was starting to look like myself again, but for how long? How long until I lose control again?
“How’s Abri?” I asked changing the subject
“Malcolm’s in the other car with her,” she replied probably knowing that that I didn’t want to go into that subject “She passed out right about when you did. Using that much power must have taken a lot out of her to help you.”
“I’ll have to remember to thank her when I see her.” I replied
“Yes, but for now just get some more rest.”
“I’ve slept enough Eve. I’m fine, really.”
“Will you just listen to me for once please?”
I smiled but did notice how tired I still felt “Fine…but only because you said please.”
She smiled yet again as I closed my eyes and fell back asleep.•
