Malcolm (7)
As I packed everything up I couldn’t help but glance over occasionally at Eve. The way she had screamed had me worry about her. I had tried to read her thoughts like how Gabriel had taught me but something seemed to keep blocking me out….and it wasn’t Eve. I swung my backpack over my shoulder and walked over to Eve who was stuffing the essentials I had bought for her last night; a brush, tooth brush, tooth paste, and some clean clothes that I let her pick out.
“You ready?” I asked her
“Yah.” she replied but her mind seemed to be elsewhere
“Evelynn….” I said but then hesitated “What happened in your dream?”
“I don’t want to talk about it.” She replied and brushed past me
You used to want to tell me things like this I thought
Eve had changed since I’d last saw her. Last knew her. Clement was already outside leaning against the car door when we checked out at the front desk and headed outside.
“You guys ready?” he asked
“Yah.” I said flatly and opened the back door for Evelynn while starring at him
We all got into the car and Clement started the ignition. The car roared to life and he shifted it into reverse and then into drive. We sped down the road in silence. I thought about Eve screaming earlier again. The fact of not knowing what happened in that dream tortured me.
“So how long have you been screaming in your dreams like that?” Clement asked her
“Are you my doctor or something?” she asked clearly not wanting to go into this subject
His grip tightened on the wheel but he didn’t stop the car. I noticed how he tried to slow his breathing.
“How long have you been having these dreams?” He asked. His voice dark.
She shifted position but replied “Over a month.”
I looked down; the same amount of time since Michael erased her memory.
“Why?” she asked seeming to notice our tension
“It’s nothing important right now.” Clement said before I could reply
We all sat in silence as the radio played Taylor Swift. Clement switched it immediately
“God they play her music too much.” He muttered as he switched it to the rock station
Right after he said that a loud POP! Sounded underneath the car to the left.
“Shit!” Clement cursed as he hit the steering wheel and coaxed the car to the side of the road.
The car came to a complete stop and Clement got immediately out
“What happened?” Eve asked
“I think…we just got a flat tire.” I said watching Clement bend down to check the tire on his side.
Eve and I both got out and Clement kicked at the tire.
“Really?!” He yelled at the sky “Just because I say something bad about Taylor Swift and you have to blow out a tire!”
“Who is he talking to?” Eve asked watching him kick the tire again
“I have no idea.” I replied
“Shit. Shit. Shit!” he yelled
“Do we have an spare?” I asked
He looked at me “Why don’t you go look?” he replied getting madder by the second
I went to the driver’s side and popped the trunk from there. I walked over to the trunk and found that there was none.
“Double crap.” I muttered
“How far away is this Society place?” Eve asked when she realized this as well
“A few miles away. We’re close but…..”
“Do we have an extra tire?” Clement asked as he came over
“Uh….”
He pushed past me and just stood there. I saw his hands clench into fists and shake.
“Clement….” I said warning him to calm the heck down. He was acting a little rash for something like this. It was only a few miles…
“Ok,” he said raising up his hands “I’m through with this piece of junk.”
Before I knew what he was doing he was at the side of the side and lifting it up. I pulled Eve out of the way as the car rolled into a ditch. Clement disappeared and was already twenty feet ahead of us. Eve and I stood in shock.
“Jeeze take it out on the car,” I muttered and looked at Eve I slid down in the ditch and grabbed my backpack. I opened the bag and found nothing was broken thankfully. I ran up to where Eve was and almost slipped but caught myself. “we’d better get going….we have quite a bite of walking to do now thanks to the demon.”•
We walked down the road in line; Clement in the front, Eve in the middle and me in the very back. I could tell Eve was a nervous after what Clement had just did. For crap’s sake he flipped the car into a ditch! We could have just left the car as it was but no, the stupid half demon had to take things to the extreme and demolish the car!
We had all walked a mile when we started to see the lines of trees up ahead.
“Can we take a break?” Eve asked as she started to slow down
“Not yet.” Clement replied without looking back
“You thirsty?” I asked holding out a bottle of water to her
She looked at me “Do you have everything in that backpack of yours?”
I smiled “No…I don’t have a compass.”
This seemed to amuse her. She took the bottle gratefully and opened the lid where she drank only a little bit of it. She handed it back and I put it back in my bag. After that we pretty much just walked side by side. I kept my eyes out for trouble like I should but found nothing. We came to the edge of the woods when Clement stopped.
“What?” I asked “Are we taking a break?”
He didn’t reply.
Everything was quite….not even the sound of birds chirping. All of a sudden a blur appeared and Clement was on the ground fighting someone. I pushed Evelynn away and brought out my pistol sword. We watched as the two demons fought, but Clement got the better hand of the fight and slammed the other demon into a tree. They both hissed at each other but Clement then stopped.
“Eliza?” I heard him say•
