Lucas (25)

I stopped at a small town and figured I needed to change my image up (no matter how much I didn’t want to). I just didn’t think a baseball cap would stop from people noticing me. I looked around and asked a couple people where the barber shop would be and led me to the edge of town to a small building. As I walked in a ringing of a bell sounded. It was strange. I hadn’t been out of the Society in so long I couldn’t recall that last time I’ve heard that sound. I stood there until an older lady came from the back.
“You have an appointment?” she asked as she looked up at me
                “Uh…”
Say yes Lucifer said in my head
                “Yes…I believe I’m a little early.”
The lady looked me up and down with crow eyes and then gave me a small smile “You must be Mr. Kyle, you’re appointment wasn’t scheduled until two but no matter I have time. Come. Sit.”
I walked over and sat in a leather chair looking into the mirror in front of me. Maybe Zoe was right about a haircut.
“So…how do you want to do this sweetie?” the lady asked me
“Uh…anything to make it look better., but I planned to cut it shorter though.”
She laughed “You wouldn’t have to cut it if you’d just take care of it, but yes I’d say shorter to. I think I’ll keep that wisp of hair like it is but it’s going to be cut like the rest.”
“Sounds good.” I replied as she pulled a sheet over me and got out her scissors.
I heard the sound of a snip and almost panicked . I never liked getting my hair cut ever since I was four and my dad had done it. Let’s just say I had to go bald for awhile after that. Once my hair grew out I never let anyone touch my hair again. I had to now though, My hair was to recognizable to everyone at the Society. My breath was shaky and the lady seemed to notice this.
                “Nervous?” she laughed
I couldn’t help but laugh to. I was being a wimp. Demons I could handle…but a simple haircut? Like I said before I never thought of barbers the same way after watching Sweeny Todd and my dad…
The thought of my father saddened me. Before the fire we had gotten into a pretty bad fight about me hanging out with the “wrong group” since I was always getting into trouble. I defended them and yelled saying that if they were losers then I might as well have been one to because they were the only ones who seemed to understand. In spite of being grounded after, I snuck out of the house and went to hang out with my friends(they were a couple years older than I was). We came back to my house all laughing and one of my friends brought out his older sister’s match box. We started messing around with the matches and things got out of hand. Being eight I didn’t think what could happen. I lit one of the matches and the flame caught too quickly. We were right under my room window and in the garden when I dropped the match. Thinking back I tried to put it out, but the fire didn’t want to be put out. As though possessed it licked its way to the house and started it on fire. My friends ran away in terror and so did I at first. When I got into the house my parents were yelling and my father had Gemma in his arms . She was only five then. Mom was trapped behind a door which had been blocked by a fallen book case. My father yelled at me to get Gemma out of there and him handing her to me…that was the last time I ever saw him.
The fire department had come but the house had exploded killing my parents and three other fire fighters with them. It was my fault they died that night. It was my fault that Gemma and I were orphans. A few weeks after the fire a demon hunter found us and took us to the Society. There we were raised by different people and so on. We’ve been living there ever since, but now here I was back out in the world and on the run.
“You ok dear?” the lady asked noticing the look on my face
“Yah…I’m fine.” I lied
“Well I think we are…just about…done. What do you think?”
I was shocked by the shortness of my hair. It still had the same still I was used to just shorter…it reminded me of Lucifer’s hair at first..but mine had its own originality.
“It looks good.” I replied
She smiled and took away the sheet so I could stand up. We walked over to her desk where I paid her for the cut from some extra money that I had found in the streets earlier.
“Thank you and come again.” She smiled
In that second I thought her eyes changed from grey to black, but I blinked and they were still the same storm cloud gray. My eyes must have been playing tricks on me.
“Uh…yah…thanks.” I said slowly and walked out of the salon
Try not to get yourself killed before you free me why don’t you? His voice echoed in my head
Did that actually happen back there?
No…he voice said sarcastically You were just seeing things. Wake up Lucas. There are more demon clans then your precious Society thinks. I went to extreme measures to keep in that way as well. Apparently it wasn’t enough….no matter though, they can take care of themselves better then the prissy demons you know of.
Oh I’m sure I said sarcastically Why are you talking to me anyways? I told you; I’m not going to free you.
Trust me, you will
What the hell is that supposed to mean?
But no one answered. I sighed and rubbed my hair. It felt weird having it so short. I walked down the side walk and kept thinking about what he said. At that moment I saw a phone booth and went to it. I had a bad feeling about what he had said. I just hoped Zoe still had a phone. I put a quarter (spare change in my own pocket) in the slot and dialed her number. The phone rang a few times when someone answered “Hello?” Zoe answered hesitantly
“Zo, it’s Luke.” I replied
“Luke!” she hissed lowering her voice “Oh my god one second.”
I waited until I heard her voice again.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?! You shouldn’t be using a phone! Everyone is freaking out right now and sending out hunters to look for you!”
“Already? Never mind I had to take a chance…” I replied “Zo, I need you to tell me where my sister is right now.”
“Why what’s wrong?”
“Zoe where is she!” I snapped
“She’s in the infirmary. No one is allowed in.”
“Shit,” I cursed “I should have known!”
“Calm down Luke, what’s wrong?”
“Lucifer! He did this! He’s speeding up the sickness so I’ll free him!”
“….I know what you’re thinking Luke, don’t do it.”
“What choice do I have Zoe?” I questioned “If I don’t he’ll find another way to make me.”
“I didn’t just risk my whole damn future for you to go free him!” she hissed “Where are you?”
“I can’t let you be around me Zo…not now.”
“Lu-”
“Please insert another quarter to make another call.” A lady’s voice said
I slammed the phone into its base “Damn it.”
I got out of the phone booth and walked down the side walk. I decided that if what Zoe said was true; that there were already people being send out to find me then I better get a move on.
So…if you’re not going to free me then where do you think you’re going?
Away, somewhere where I can’t be bothered by the likes of you.
There is no such place my dear child. He laughed I’ll be there all your life…and even after that.
Just go away. I’ve had enough of you for awhile.
His laugh echoed in my head but his presence faded and I was alone. I pulled out a base ball cap and put it on. I figured I’d have to change clothes soon, but it would have to wait until later. After I had got out of the small town I walked down the road where I hitched a ride from a trucker. We drove to another town where he dropped me off near a big hotel. I thanked him (I wasn’t going to be rude to a trucker, haven’t you seen movies?) and walked into the hotel and changed into some of the clothes that Zoe had packed for me in the bathroom. I pulled out a dark green shirt and some jeans. I guess Zoe thought it best that I blend in as well (a good thing to). I walked out of the hotel without anyone noticing me one bit. I continued to walk until dusk, my legs hurt from walking all day and night. I found a good spot along the woods of the third town I had been in and settled there. It was about three miles from civilization, and out of the way so no one would notice if they came by. I leaned against a tree taking my backpack off. I dug through the backpack and through all the cloths and found a straight silver knife.
Zoe had been thinking the same thing as well then. We might encounter more than just people. I bet she was thinking about Layla’s clan though. I found a fallen branch and started cutting it with the knife for something to do. I wish I had my iPod right now. Listening to Metallica sounded pretty good right now. I threw the tick away and put the knife back into the bag. I sighed as I waited for sleep to take over…but I couldn’t. twenty minutes had passed by before I finally could, but it wasn’t for long. I looked up into the sky and it was dark. I was still tired and my limbs were still sore but I knew I had to get going again.
“Why couldn’t I have just stolen one of the cars from the Society?” I asked myself as I stood up and continued walking “Oh yah that’s right!” I said hitting my forehead “because gas costs fricken three dollars a gallon!”X

I looked up as the sun started to peek over the road. I decided to stay off the roads for now on in case I met anyone from the Society. I didn’t know what to do about Luci; he was going to kill my sister even quicker if I didn’t set him free. I knew she would die sometime anyways but he was just doing this to get me mad enough to accept. I couldn’t just let my sister die…but I couldn’t betray my friends like that either…
Family comes first before anything Luke….remember that. You can have millions of friends but only one true family… my father’s voice rang in my head
God I miss you dad…mom to. I don’t know what to do. I wish you were here to tell me…
He was right though; I will only have one family…and my sister was all that was left of it. If she died…I don’t know what I’d do, I wouldn’t know how I could go on. Sure I’d destroy mankind but I’d save my family. I always said that I’d give up anything to save my sister; here was the chance and I hesitated. I stopped and looked into the sky.
“Why? Why my family?” I asked myself
I like you mean to look down. Lucifer replied in my head
Go away. I replied and to not to my surprise he didn’t
Just wanted to let you know to skip the next town. I don’t want you to get killed or worse.
What could be worse?
Well….torture…imprisonment….starvation. Shall I go on?
Why should I skip the next town? What’s there?
Oh you’ll find out if you don’t just trust me.
Yah I laughed Like I’m going to trust you. You’re trying to kill my sister even faster!
What’s your point? I want to be set free, you think that I’m just going to take no for an answer? Here if you say yes I’ll stop. I’ll even save you from certain death.
Whatever Luci
Don’t call me that!  He growled but then seemed to calm down Lucas…I’m not joking about this town. It’s dangerous for a pureblood….even my own.
Not listening I replied
Fine. Fine! Go ahead and walk to your death! Don’t come begging or crying to me in hell though.
His voice then faded into silence. I was by myself again. I didn’t trust Lucifer but I couldn’t help but wonder about this town though. I had to go through it though. I wish Zo was here with me, but I couldn’t let her risk her life or future. If she had come with me she would have been exiled for treason. At least it was only that, but Zoe was on a good path to become much more then she was now. I couldn’t let her ruin that for me. As I caught sight of buildings a mile away I thought of why Zoe would even come to help me in the first place. Sure we were friends but why would she want to risk everything for me? Maybe she just didn’t want to have to deal with her father any more or see the world like Gemma did. One of those two things had to be it; they were the only ones that made sense.
I stopped when I came out of the shadow of the woods. It was still too early for people to be out, so I didn’t have to worry so much. I looked up and down the sides of the road and walked quickly over to the other side. I suddenly felt that I should have listened to Lucifer for once; the town made chills go down my spine as I walked along the sidewalk. Nothing seemed to be wrong with the town though, it looked like any other, but the feeling I got wasn’t good. I looked up at the house’s empty and dark windows as I traveled further in the town. I was walking by a little alley when I heard a car driving. I tried to act casual as it passed, but it started to slow down. I looked up and my insides froze at the color and model; it was a metallic silver Jaguar xf. I continued to walk until the car stopped a few feet away and people from the Society got out. I turned and broke out into a sprint as they came after me.
“Don’t let him get away!” one of them yelled
I took a sharp left as I ran down alongside one of the buildings. I heard gun shots pass by my sides and over my head. Shit. I kept running not even risking stopping to get out the knife Zo had packed. I saw a dark old abandoned building and ran towards it. I pushed open the doors as more bullets missed me by inches. When I finally got them open I felt a biting pain in the back of my leg and ducked into the building slamming the doors shut.
I grounded my teeth as I scooted away from the doors.
Damn it boy watch the bullets! I told you to stay out of this town!
You knew they were here?!
Of course I did but they aren’t the worst of your troubles yet…
I was about to reply when I heard the doors slam open. I pulled myself behind some of the boxes and forced myself to stand on my right leg. I stayed silent as I heard their footsteps.
“He’s in here somewhere,” I heard one say “Split up. If you see him…shoot him.”
I limped away as the voices would get closer. I ducked behind another stack of crates. I hid there as the room became silent. I could still hear their breathing though. I heard footsteps come right behind the boxes where I was at and I held my breath….
Seconds ticked by as everything was silent yet again…..the footsteps moved on. I moved quickly as I tried to keep out of their sight. I stopped at the corner and peeked around to find five men. Oh and what a surprise Zoe’s dad was here. I wondered what could have tipped me off; probably being the only one walking the streets was a giveaway.
“You seen any sight of him?” one of the hunters asked Zoe’s dad
He waved them away and I ducked away out of sight as he looked over towards me. I looked up knowing what they were going to try. I climbed the crates as silently as I could as they came to my side, but I was on the other side before they could see me. I turned around and found a gun pointing at my head…double shit. The other men came running and stopped when they saw what was going on.
“Told you he was in here.” A shorter man smiled
Richard smiled at me as he held the gun at me “Thought you’d get away that easily? Tell me. How did you get out?”
I came with a lie pretty quickly by surprise “It’s not called a bond for nothing Richard…Luci helped me.”
“Who’s Luci?”
I rolled my eyes “Lucifer idiot.”
He pushed the gun closer “You can say hello then for me.”
The metal of the barrel was cold. I waited for the bullet.
Oh this is pathetic…you’re really giving up that easily? Lucifer asked
Well it’s not like I’m a demon
I heard him sigh I always have to do everything.
My eyebrows scrunched at this but a few seconds later Zoe’s dad was on the ground crying out in pain. The other hunters came running after me but arrows and knives pierced their backs and necks. Two fell dead, the rest sadly including Richard were only wounded. I looked up and ducked as a thick inch arrow flew above my head. I looked up and found seven people in armor, three were men while the rest female. One came out of the back and smiled at me. It was the hair stylist from yesterday. I almost didn’t recognize her, but when her eyes turned back to grey for one second that is when I knew. I backed up looking at the door from the corner of my eye.
“Hello Mr. Kyle,” she smiled pointed teeth “Fancy meeting you again.”
In the next second one of the she-demons pushed me to the ground and held my neck, pushing down, and cutting off my air supply. I tried to push her off but my body was too tired and she was to strong. Her black hole of eyes stared into me while long platinum blonde hair fell from behind her ears. I tried to gasp for breath but I couldn’t. She looked down at me as if I was something to eat.
“I love the smell of fear in the morning,” she laughed in a raspy voice “Can I have him? Though It’d be such a waste to ruin such a handsome face.”
“I must agree,” the barber demon replied “he looks much better with the haircut.”
They both laughed and the other demons joined them. The room starting to blur as I tried to breathe. I looked up at the demon barber and my mind started to go blank. I couldn’t die…not like this. My last thoughts were of Gemma and Zoe….would I ever see them again? The answer; of course not.
“We’ll bring him with us…he might be of use to us...or he can be a new chew toy if not.” was the last thing I heard before passing out.X
